When your ductwork runs through a 140°F attic or freezing crawlspace, leaky joints and thin insulation cost you double on every utility bill!
According to ENERGY STAR® and BPI building science, the average Kansas City home loses 25% to 35% of its conditioned air through leaky ductwork before it ever reaches the living room! Worse yet, when ducts run through unconditioned attics, crawlspaces, or garages, every supply leak depressurizes your house (pulling outside air in through walls) and every return leak sucks 140°F dusty attic air or damp crawlspace air straight into your HVAC blower. Our local family team (Sean, Caleb, and Luke) uses calibrated Duct Blaster® fans and Pressure Pan testing to pinpoint and seal every leak.
Pressure Pan + Duct Blaster
Why Ducts in Attics, Crawlspaces, Garages & Knee Walls Destroy Your Comfort & Utility Bills
If a duct leaks inside your finished basement ceiling between two conditioned floors, that air mostly stays inside the house. But when your ductwork runs through an unconditioned space—like a 140°F summer attic, a 10°F winter crawlspace, an unheated garage ceiling, or a 1.5-story knee wall—it hits your wallet with a brutal triple penalty:
- 1. Direct Supply Air Loss + House Depressurization (Double Air Leak!): When a supply duct in your attic or crawlspace leaks 20% of its air outside the thermal boundary, you don’t just lose the air you paid Evergy or Spire to cool or heat. Because your furnace blower pulled 100% of that air from inside the house and only returned 80% back to the rooms, your entire house becomes depressurized—sucking an equal amount of hot, humid summer air or freezing winter air in through every window, door, and wall crack!
- 2. Return Duct Leaks Suck 140°F Attic Heat, Dust, Mold & Radon Straight Into Your Blower: A leaky return duct or panned floor joist in an unconditioned crawlspace, attic, or basement acts like a giant vacuum cleaner. It sucks superheated 140°F attic air (instantly overwhelming your A/C coil), fiberglass dust, crawlspace moisture, or soil gases straight into your air handler—and positively pressurizes your house so conditioned air is forced out through the ceiling!
- 3. Conductive Radiant Heat Loss Through Thin R-4 / R-6 Flex Duct: Standard flex duct in an attic only has a thin 1-inch wrap of R-4 or R-6 insulation. Pushing 55°F air-conditioned air through 50 feet of thin duct sitting inside a 145°F Kansas City attic warms that air up to 66°F+ before it ever reaches your bedroom register! Sealing the ducts with mastic and burying them deep under R-49–R-60 blown-in insulation solves both leakage and conductive heat gain.

Target: Under 1.0 Pascal per Register
How do we know which specific duct run buried inside an attic, garage ceiling, or wall chase is leaking to the outside without tearing out your drywall? While our Blower Door fan depressurizes your home to -50 Pascals, we place a specialized gasketed “Pressure Pan” over each individual supply and return register connected to a digital manometer. If a duct branch is 100% sealed inside the house, the Pressure Pan reads near 0.0 Pascals. If it reads 3.0, 8.0, or 15+ Pascals, that specific duct run has a direct hole or disconnection to the outside attic, crawlspace, or garage!
🔬 How Pressure Pan, Duct Blaster® & Duct Sealing Transform Your Home
1. Pressure Pan Diagnostics
By placing a gasketed Pressure Pan over each vent while the Blower Door runs at -50 Pa, we measure exact Pascal pressure drops on every single supply and return run—instantly flagging which specific boot, take-off, or panned joist is leaking outside the thermal envelope.
2. Duct Blaster® Total Leakage Testing
When you need an exact quantitative measurement of duct leakage (CFM25) for code compliance, new zones, or severe unconditioned duct runs, we mask your registers and connect our calibrated Duct Blaster® fan directly to your air handler or return plenum—pairing it with non-toxic fog to watch every leak live!
3. Seal & Bury Unconditioned Attic Ducts
Ducts running through a 140°F Kansas City attic lose massive cooling capacity through leaky joints and thin R-6 wrap. We seal every accessible trunk, take-off, and drywall boot with fiber-reinforced mastic/foam and bury the ducts deep under R-49–R-60 blown-in insulation!
4. Bring Crawlspace Ducts Inside the Shell
When ducts run through a vented dirt crawlspace, winter winds freeze your floors and return leaks suck damp, musty soil air into your home. By encapsulating the crawlspace and sealing the rim joists with spray foam, we bring your ductwork inside the conditioned thermal envelope!
5. Fix Leaky Basement Return Joists
Most KC homes use sheet-metal “panned” floor joists as return ducts. Gaps along the subfloor, rim joists, and furnace filter slot depressurize the basement—which can pull deadly carbon monoxide (CO) down your water heater flue and suck dust and radon into your air!
6. Restore Airflow to Far Bedrooms
Why does the bedroom over the garage or at the far end of the hall have almost zero airflow coming out of the vent? Because 30% of the pressure bled out through leaky trunk seams along the way! Sealing the trunk line restores strong, balanced CFM delivery to your farthest rooms.
