Energy Audit Kansas City
As the cold weather begins to take hold across the Kansas City metro many homeowners are beginning to fire up their fireplace. There have already been five house fires siting fireplaces as the cause so far this year in the Kansas City area. We recommend following these safety tips when using your fireplace.

1. Keep fireplaces clean.

Have your chimney inspected annually. Also, make sure to keep the area around the hearth free of any debris and flammable decorations. Leave glass doors open when a fire is going and use a mesh screen.

2. Safely burn fuels.

Never use flammable liquids to start a fire. Only burn seasoned wood that is not moist. Never use trash or cardboard for fuel. Build small fires that burn completely. Before removing ashes make sure they are completely cooled. Never leave a fire unattended.

3. Use smoke alarms and check smoke alarm batteries.

Along with using your smoke alarms in sleeping areas and checking batteries monthly ensure that the fireplace is vented properly.

Fireplaces are an enjoyable part of the home if used correctly. We want you and your family to be safe so please follow these simple steps.  Read more about fireplace safety at the website.
