We ran across a very interesting blog that explained a fascinating concept. Off Grid World describes a process of turning your urine into energy in a recent blog. Believe it or not this process was discovered by a 14 year old girl and some of her friends. They discovered that the hydrogen and oxygen in the urine can be separated, then the hydrogen can be purified and used to power a generator.
So how much energy are we talking here? You’d be surprised. A single liter of urine can power a small generator up to 6 hours. Most people produce one to two liters of urine per day which means a family of 2 to 4 could theoretically provide 24 hours of power for the generator. A small generator would produce enough to power LED lighting and small electronics.
So the question is, if you could power your home using pee would you? We agree with Off Grid World’s blog that there is a certain “yuck factor” as they call it, but would you really just flush something down the toilet that could provide you with essentially free energy?
